Surrogate Parent Initiative Looking for Volunteers
What:
Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada is looking for volunteers willing to
advocate at local schools for foster children with academic, social,
emotional or behavioral problems. Most of the children live in group
homes where they are raised by staff rather than foster parents.
Why:
Every child needs a voice. Foster children’s voices are not always
heard. Here in Clark County Nevada, you can be that voice.
How:
After a series of training classes, you will be matched with a child
and your name will be presented to the court where you will receive a
court order to act in behalf of the child as an educational surrogate
parent for all special education issues. Although you will meet the
child, you will not spend time alone with the child. Approximately, 10
hours a year will be the amount of time needed to advocate for the
child. No experience is necessary. Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada will
provide training and on going assistance.
When:
Thursday, February 18 from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Monday, February 22 from 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Both trainings at 610 S. 9th Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101

LIED FOUNDATION CHALLENGE! WE REACHED OUR GOAL!
We
are very proud to announce that we have reached our 2009 Lied
Challenge goal of $500,000 thanks to the incredible generosity of many
in the community! Donations from $20 to $125,000 helped us reach
this milestone.
We are so grateful to the Lied Foundation
for re-energizing our Capital Campaign and we look forward to conquering the next challenge, $500,000 by June 30, 2010.
As was true with the last challenge, the Lied Foundation will match those funds with an additional $500,000.
Legal
Aid Center is the only provider of free legal
services in Clark County to low-income residents who are victims of
child abuse, domestic violence and consumer fraud. This past
year, we have been overwhelmed with requests to help more abused kids,
victims of domestic violence and families facing foreclosure and
bankruptcy. This money will enable us to serve thousands more of our
most vulnerable residents.
If you would like to get an early start on helping us
with the second phase of our goal, click
here to donate through our website or mail a check to 800 S. 8th St., Las Vegas, 89101. For more
information on the Challenge Grant, please contact Lynn Etkins, Development Director at
